The UltraShape Solution

Information for Patients
It often takes more than a healthy lifestyle to give your body the shape you want. UltraShape has developed the first safe, surgery-free body contouring treatment to successfully break down fat cells and deliver effective results.

The convenient treatment is completely non-invasive and provides measurable body contouring results - with no side-effects and no need for follow-up maintenance. Treatment time ranges between one hour to ninety minutes - and as soon as it is completed, you can get right back to your daily routine.

Designed for average to overweight women and men
The UltraShape treatment is the alternative for women and men who want effective removal of excess fat cells without surgery. It focuses on the abdomen, inner and outer thighs (“saddle bags”) and flanks (“love handles”).

Enjoy your new body contour in only 28 days After just one treatment, you will notice an average reduction of two centimeters in your body circumference. Treated patients have consistently reported a painless and comfortable experience. Imagine, you can expect to shop for clothes that are a whole size smaller!

UltraShape Treatment

UltraShape treatment takes place in your physician’s office
Your physician begins by examining and marking the treatment area (the size of the area determines the duration of the session). Then, while you lie back on a comfortable Contour I bed, the operator will use a round hand-held transducer (a device that converts electrical energy into ultrasound energy) to deliver ultrasound beams gently over the marked region of your body. During treatment, the beam of focused therapeutic ultrasound energy penetrates the specific target zone and selectively destroys fat cells while having no effect on skin, blood vessels and nerves. The entire procedure is guided by innovative tracking technology that ensures smooth, uniform contouring.

At the end of the session, you will experience no post treatment discomfort or side effects and be immediately able to resume your daily routine. And of course, no recovery period is required.

The UltraShape Contour I system
The Contour I device is comprised of several subsystems:

Transducer
The transducer delivers a focused ultrasonic beam and provides real-time optical (via tracking system) and acoustic feedback on treatment. Specific, pre-set ultrasound parameters ensure that disruption is of the fat cells exclusively, within the targeted area. A built-in control verifies acoustic contact during the treatment and is indicated on the user interface. An additional built-in control monitors the temperature of the transducer. The spatial position of the transducer is constantly monitored by the tracking system.

Video tracking and guidance system
The real-time tracking and guidance system creates an immersed environment for treatment control. It minimizes the system training period and learning curve. The tracking system comprises a state-of-the-art tracking algorithm using a single video camera. The tracking system ensures:

The tracking system addresses the dynamic nature of the treated area - a key challenge in body contouring procedures. The patient breathes and moves during the procedure. Fat, flaccid by nature, undergoes spatial deformities in real-time. Contour I solves this problem by recording and synchronizing the body's position in real-time enabling the patient to move or even walk away mid treatment. The system can then accurately resume treatment when the patient returns.

What happens to fat cells after UltraShape treatment?
When fat tissue is treated by UltraShape, the focused ultrasound beam is directed toward a specific area within the fat layer. This causes mechanical disruption of the fat cell membranes, without impacting the blood vessels, peripheral sensory nerves and connective tissue. Since the effect is focused to a specific depth, overlaying skin is not damaged.

Fat clearance mechanism
Fat inside fat cells exists in the form of triglycerides. A triglyceride molecule is comprised of three fatty acids attached to a glycerol backbone. When the fat cell membrane is disrupted, triglycerides are released into the interstitial fluid between the cells. At this point, a series of metabolic pathways direct the trafficking of the water insoluble molecules of triglyceride through the water-based circulatory system and to the interstitial fluid space. During passage through the interstitial space, lipoprotein-bound triglycerides are catabolized to free fatty acids and glycerol molecules.

Free fatty acids released during the treatment eventually reach the liver. In the liver, there is no distinction between fatty acids that originate from adipocytes disrupted in an UltraShape treatment, those taken from adipocytes due to physiological needs, and those originating from a consumed meal. In other words, free fatty acids released during an UltraShape treatment are processed in normal pathways that nature has evolved for metabolizing fat.

The device that busts fat in a lunch hour
It could be the Holy Grail of dieting - a pain-free method of quickly losing excess pounds that can be carried out during a lunch break. Scientists have come up with a machine that offers a non-surgical alternative to liposuction by 'melting' away unwanted bulges without damaging surrounding tissue.

Creators of the machine believe it will revolutionise 'body sculpting' - allowing millions of image-conscious people to target 'lumps and bumps' all over their body. The flab-buster works by firing high frequency ultrasound waves from outside the body to specific areas. These waves break down fat cells, but because they are delivered so accurately they do not damage blood vessels or other tissue such as skin, muscle, bone and nerves.

From there, the broken down cells are absorbed into the patient's system and burned up by the body. Co-inventor Dr Ami Glicksman said: 'It is a totally non-invasive procedure; no operating room is needed.

'It is an office treatment. You walk in, you get it and you walk out. There is no recuperation time required and it is going to change the world of body-shaping.'

He added that patients using his machine would not need to go on a diet. 'The problem with diet is that it is not selective,' said Dr Glicksman. 'You lose weight from all over; you cannot say where you will lose weight for body-shaping purposes.

'Even if you have only small "love handles" or "saddlebags" we will be able to treat them.'

Dr Yoram Eshel, Dr Glicksman's co-researcher at the Sheba Medical Centre, in Tel Aviv, Israel, said: 'The inherent safety of our method lies in the fact that we only do half the traditional job compared to liposuction and let nature do the rest.

'Physiological clearance of the fat tissue occurs over a period of about three weeks following the procedure, similar to the way the body clears out damaged tissue found in a bruise.'

An estimated one million men and women every year undergo liposuction - an operation where unwanted fat is sucked out from under the skin using a tube and vacuum pump.

But because the procedure is so invasive it must be performed under anaesthetic, and carries the potential complications associated with surgery.

The UltraShape machine carries far fewer risks and will enable much smaller, controlled amounts of fat to be removed.
