Frequently Asked Questions

Accent / Cellulite Removal / Body Sculpting

How is non surgical Fat Reduction performed?

Using a combination of Bipolar and Unipolar radio frequency your area to be treated is heated to a therapeutic temperature range. A number of passes are performed over the area, maintaining an optimum and predetermined temperature range. This process commences the breakdown and removal of unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. Since the body does not create new fat cells, this area is forever free of those specific fat cells. Treatment areas are mapped out to re-contour your shape, aided by accurate photographic record and measurements at each step in the process.

What will I look and feel like afterward?

You will in most cases see visible reduction in treated areas. As most treatments are carried out on a weekly basis, you will see the change occurring. Photographic data supports this process. You will have no discomfort, you may experience some localised redness in the treatment area, this diminishes rapidly. You can return to work straight after your Accent treatment, with no side effects.

How soon will I see results?

Usually patients notice changes within 4 sessions. 8 is the average number of treatments for maximum results.

What results can I expect?

You will most likely notice an improvement in your skin tone. The appearance of stretch marks and loose skin may be improved. Many patients report that they are able to lose weight more easily while in treatment. This is an added benefit of Accent RF.

Should Accent Fat and anti cellulite treatments be used alone?

No. We highly recommend you add diet and exercise to your daily routine while you are undergoing fat reduction and cellulite treatments. For most patients this improves results.

How many anti cellulite treatments can I have?

Two cellulite treatment sessions per fortnight are recommended, up to a maximum of 12. For those on a diet, or in the process of losing a significant amount of weight, or those with long-term problematic cellulite, one treatment per week is recommended if proper nutrition is maintained.

How long does each session last?

Treatment sessions last about 30 minutes, to one hour. We focus on your problem areas, but time is given to other areas to stimulate circulation and fatty acid elimination.

Acne  /  Pimples

What is acne?

Acne is a common chronic skin condition caused by inflammation of oil-producing sebaceous glands. Acne usually begins between the ages of ten and thirteen and persists for five to ten years. Acne is most common on the face, but can also occur on the back, shoulders, neck, chest, scalp, upper arms and legs. Acne develops when the skin cells don’t shed properly — they stick together and plug up the pores. This blockage encourages an oil called sebum and a bacteria called p.acnes to build up in the skin pores, leading to inflammation.

Can acne be prevented? How is it treated?

Acne is a fact of life for many adolescents. Approximately 90% of all adolescents and 25% of all adults experience acne at some point in their lives. In adolescents, acne breakouts are related to the natural release of androgen hormones, which occur during puberty. In adult women, acne is often related to the monthly menstrual cycle. Contrary to popular belief, acne is not caused by eating chocolate, greasy foods or bad hygiene. In the U.S. alone, over one billion dollars is spent on acne medications and treatments each year. In many instances, the money spent yields less than satisfactory results, is cumbersome or causes side effects. Conventional treatments include over-the-counter cleansers and lotions, prescription antibiotics, retinoids and hormonal therapies.

ClearLight Acne Treatment

What is ClearLight? How does it work?

The ClearLight system uses a unique high-intensity blue-violet light that activates the bacteria-fighting militia called porphyrins. The porphyrins start a chemical reaction that produces peroxide, which destroys the P. acnes bacteria.

What are the features of ClearLight?

ClearLight Features a new paradigm for acne treatment High-intensity, narrow spectrum blue-violet light destroys P. acnes bacteria Short treatment regimen; eight treatments over four weeks to achieve impressive results No side effects, no pain, no downtime Patient Selection: patients with mild to moderate inflammatory acne

What happens during a ClearLight treatment?

With ClearLight, a typical treatment session requires approximately 15-20 minutes. Patients lie comfortably on a bed while the therapeutic light is applied; sometimes there is a slight warming sensation. ClearLight treatments are described as easy, even relaxing, but most importantly, safe and painless. Patients often listen to music while being treated.

How many ClearLight treatments are required?

Mokaskin Clinics develop treatment plans based on individual patient needs. Typically, ClearLight treatments are given twice a week for four weeks. It is important to keep treatment appointments recommended by Mokaskin in order to see maximum results.

Are ClearLight results permanent?

ClearLight treatments usually help control acne breakouts for four to eight months; after that, occasional touch ups may be necessary.

Will skin be blemish-free at the end of the ClearLight Treatments?

Though the inflammation will be gone for a majority of patients, some may experience residual redness where the inflamed blemish was located. The redness will dissipate over time.

Is ClearLight safe? Are there any side effects?

ClearLight is one of the safest acne treatments available. The system’s blue-violet light penetrates just deep enough into the tissue to reach the acne target, without adversely affecting surrounding skin. ClearLight has no known side effects.

Who can be treated with ClearLight?

Most people can benefit from treatment. ClearLight has proven to be very effective on mild to moderate, inflammatory acne. Pregnant women and people with photosensitivities should consult with their physician.

Are ClearLight treatments FDA-cleared?

Yes. The ClearLight system is the first device to receive FDA clearance to market for the safe and effective treatment of moderate inflammatory acne. After eight, regularly spaced treatments, patients show significant improvement with no side effects noted.

Are light treatments safe for all skin types?

Yes, this technology can be used to treat unwanted hair on all skin types, including dark-skinned individuals such as those of African, Hispanic or Asian descent.

IPL  /  Pigmentation  /  Rosacea  /  Facial Veins

IPL Hair Removal  /  Unwanted Hair  /  Hormonal Hair

What causes unwanted hair?

Excess and unwanted hair is a common problem. Women frequently experience this condition on the face, especially the upper lip or eyebrow area, at the bikini line, under their arms or on their legs. Men often have unwanted hair on their back or chest, between their eyebrows or on other parts of their face. In many cases excessive hair growth runs in families. Race can also be a factor — whites are more prone to having excess facial hair than are Asians and blacks. White women of Mediterranean descent are more likely to have unwanted hair than women who have a Scandinavian background. Hormones also play a role. Some people experience unwanted or excess hair from the time they reach puberty; others find it to be a condition that gets worse with age. Some women experience additional hair growth during pregnancy or menopause.

What are IPL Systems for Hair Removal?

This breakthrough technology uses broadband, IPL (intense pulsed light) technology to damage hair follicles for long-term hair removal. IPL systems for hair removal go by many names including the Lumenis One system, Mokaskin system, the VascuLight system and IPL Quantum system. Each system has shown to be a successful method for reducing unwanted, unsightly hairs.

Unlike conventional laser systems, IPL systems utilize a broad light spectrum with wavelengths ranging from 590 to 1200 nm (green, yellow, orange, red and infra-red). They also emit light energy in very carefully timed bursts to:

maximise the effectiveness of the treatment decrease in potential for injury to the surrounding skin minimize patient discomfort IPL systems treat the hair by directing light energy through a light guide placed on the patient's skin. A thin layer of transparent gel covers the treatment area to focus the light energy and cool the top skin layer. The light energy heats and damages the hair follicle, typically causing the hair itself to fall out from the follicle. Mokaskin system technology provides a procedure that is gentle and non-invasive, with nominal side effects.

With its powerful, innovative software, Mokaskin system treatment parameters can be selected according to an individual's specific skin colour, hair colour and hair density. This major advantage allows the technician to customize each individual treatment based on personal experience, as well as the unique attributes of the hair follicles.

As a result of this computer-generated precision, the Mokaskin system has proven effective on a wide range of hair colours, from blonde through auburn to brown and dark black hair. Most important of all, the Mokaskin system successfully removes hair from all skin types — from porcelain white through olive to dark brown complexions.

In addition, Mokaskin system technology enables the technician to efficiently remove hair from any part of the body, no matter how deep the follicles may reside. Treatment of sensitive areas like the nose, underarms and bikini line can usually be tolerated with minimal discomfort.

Another Mokaskin system advantage is its wide treatment area, enabling the device to treat patients rapidly. In fact, approximately 100 - 200 hairs can be treated with each flash of the light, so that large swaths of hair on the legs, back and chest can be treated quickly in a single session.

Multiple treatment sessions are typically required for long-lasting hair removal. In a recent clinical study, researchers from Cornell and Duke Medical Centres reported an average hair loss of 64% at six months or more of follow-up after multiple treatments. Study results also confirmed that the Mokaskin hair removal system uniquely achieves significant, long-lasting hair removal through selective cell destruction to hair follicles.

Can all hair be treated?

Yes, treatments are customised according to hair colour, texture and location. Any hair with at least some pigment can be treated.

Is IPL hair removal Painful?

Most people tolerate the treatments very well. Discomfort is often described as a slight tingling or a pinch similar to the snap of a rubber band.

How much time is there between hair removal sessions?

Subsequent sessions are scheduled when the hair begins to regrow. The timing for this can range from four to eight weeks, depending on hair type and the part of the body being treated. On average, appointments are scheduled four to six weeks apart.

Does this technology really remove hair long-term?

Yes. Scientific studies show that the use of targeted, light-based energy actually damages or destroys hair follicles at the cellular level. A permanent reduction in the number of regrowing hairs is usually achieved following each treatment.

Are there any possible side effects?

The appearance of the treated area immediately following treatment will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of the procedure and skin type. Side effects, if any, are usually minor. There may be some redness and swelling around the treated hair follicles; this is a desired clinical result indicating that the follicle has responded to treatment. This reaction typically disappears within hours. Most people return to normal activity right away. On rare occasions, some blistering may occur, but this typically resolves quickly. The skin can become darker or lighter following treatment, but will generally return to normal within a few weeks. Limiting sun exposure before and after each treatment will minimise the risk of complications.

IPL Skin Restoration  /  Pigmentation  /  Rosacea  /  Red Veins

What is Skin Photo-Restoration?

IPL Skin Photo-Restoration is a combination of intense Pulsed light and Photon Therapy. Polymodulation frequency - LED RED light and low level Diode Laser light. This technology clears unwanted lesions but refreshes, pumps and stimulates blood flow, collagen production and promote tissue repair, while promoting the bodies own immune responses and its own healing abilities.

Ultrashape  /  Non-Surgical Liposuction  /  Body Contouring

What is UltraShape?

UltraShape is a safe, effective, reliable, non-surgical, painless treatment to remove stubborn deposits of fat using focused ultrasound.

Can anyone have UltraShape treatments?

UltraShape is not for everyone. It is not for overweight people and it is not used as a method for weight loss. It is also not for people who do not have at least 1.5 cm of fat.

Can both men and women have UltraShape treatments?

Yes. UltraShape is equally effective for both men and women.

How does UltraShape work?

The transducer is placed on the skin and delivers focused ultrasound to the subcutaneous fat. The acoustic ultrasound energy selectively disrupts the fat cells, but does not damage surrounding tissues such as nerves, blood vessels, muscle or collagen.

What happens to the fat released by UltraShape?

The released fat contains mainly triglycerides. The body can carry away more triglycerides than the amount released with the UltraShape treatment. The triglycerides are broken down into glycerol and free fatty acids by natural fat metabolism pathways. The free fatty acids bind to albumin and are transported to the liver. The liver cannot distinguish between free fatty acids originating from the ruptured fat cells or those originating from a meal. They are then used by the body as building blocks or energy.

Is ultrasound used for other purposes in medicine?

Ultrasound has been used for many years in medicine as a diagnostic tool to image various organs such as the heart, and liver, and in pre-natal exams to image babies.

What is involved with the UltraShape treatment?

Before the procedure, the patient's body mass index is calculated to ensure that it is less than 29. The area to be treated is measured to make sure there is at least 1.5 cm of fat. The area is marked, the circumference is measured, and the patient is weighed. Photographs are taken.

Is UltraShape safe?

The UltraShape treatment is safe. No abnormalities in lipid levels or liver function tests were observed during or after the studies, and liver ultrasounds showed no changes.

Does UltraShape hurt?

No. It does not hurt and most patients find the treatments relaxing.

How many UltraShape treatments are necessary?

Typically, 3 treatments are done unless there is not enough fat left following an UltraShape treatment.

How far apart are the UltraShape treatments?

UltraShape treatments are performed once a month.

Is there any recovery time with UltraShape?

No. Patients can resume their normal activities right after UltraShape.

Are there care instructions after the UltraShape treatment?

Patients should have a low fat diet and exercise regularly to burn away the released fat.

How will the treated area look after UltraShape?

After 3 weeks, the treated areas appear smaller and smooth, with no irregularities in texture or bumps.

Will the fat recur after UltraShape treatments?

No, the fat will not recur unless the patient eats excessive calories, does not exercise, and gains weight.

Is there weight loss after UltraShape?

No. Weight should remain constant. UltraShape will not cause weight loss.

How much reduction in circumference is seen after UltraShape?

A 2 to 7 cm reduction in circumference is seen after UltraShape treatments.

When are the results seen after UltraShape treatment?

Results are seen about 3 weeks after UltraShape.

Are maintenance treatments required?

No. Further UltraShape treatments would be done only if the patient gained weight and developed more fat deposits.

Can UltraShape be done after liposuction?

Yes.
